Late September // New Mexico’s Carson National Forest // 4 Days // Approximate Route Distance: 325 Miles // Approximate Elevation Range: 6,500 to 11,200 ft. // NMBR’s Camino del Tesoro will traverse the scenic high-country of Colorado and New Mexico during the fall season—when the aspens are golden and the air is crisp. Areas of exploration will include San Juan Mountains, Continental Divide, and Sangre de Christo Mountains.
The Experience
This September, New Mexico Black Range will guide a four-day, 325-mile overland adventure that will traverse the Centennial State and Land of Enchantment’s spectacular and rugged high-country. NMBR’s Camino del Tesoro Overland route was featured in the Spring 2014 Overland Journal story Finding Forrest’s Treasure by Dr. Jon Solberg. The story charts Dr. Solberg and (NMBR guide) Jake Quiñones’ journey across the volcanic fields, mountains and canyons of northern New Mexico in search of Forrest Fenn’s hidden (multi-million dollar) treasure. The Camino del Tesoro Overland route will feature vivid fall colors, high-altitude shelf road, cold water creeks, golden grass meadows, historic sites, high-desert plateau, dense forest and wildlife viewing opportunities. Over three quarters of the Camino del Tesoro route will be comprised of unpaved backroads. Route and camping location elevations will range in altitude between 6,500 and 11,900 feet. During the Camino del Tesoro, NMBR will cover a variety of topics including area landscape features, area history, vehicle maintenance, overland tool kit assembly, driving techniques, vehicle dynamics, and other overland-based skill building subjects. All nights will be spent camping deep in the backcountry and enjoying the company of fellow adventurists.
Where, When & Pricing
The Camino del Tesoro will take place Friday, September 27th through Monday, September 30th, 2024. Participants will meet the morning of Friday, September 27th in Colorado; the exact departure location and details will be provided during the registration process. Pricing for single driver (single participant) is $1,061.00 (plus tax). Pricing for each additional participant in vehicle (passengers, second drivers, minors) is $894.00 (plus tax).
Planning & Preparations
The Camino del Tesoro will require participants to be self-supportive with regards to vehicle, equipment, meals, and supplies. Services or re-supply of any kind, including cell signals, fuel, food, water, or anything remotely civilized, will be unavailable for stretches of up to 200 miles (or more if re-routes occur). Please note: Cold weather and snow are entirely possible during the course of the CDT.
Go Boldly with NMBR - Over the past decade, NMBR has written a series of informative overland travel-based articles (NMBR’s Field Preparedness Manual) with topics ranging from field kit assembly, to vehicle maintenance and upkeep, to equipment and gear advice. These articles, paired with extensive checklists and instructions, are provided to registered participants as a solid foundation for what to expect, how to prepare, and what to bring for the adventure. During the CDT pre-trip planning and preparation period, NMBR will be available to provide expert opinion and feedback to registered participants for any questions or concerns related to getting ready and gearing up for the adventure. During the CDT, NMBR will revisit many of the topics covered in NMBR’s Field Preparedness Manual with discussions, demonstrations, and lessons. The self-sufficient aspect of NMBR guided expeditions, overland adventures, and training courses challenges and prepares participants for their future 4WD based endeavors—to go boldly, prepared, and with confidence.
